Emotional Regulation

An important way to connect and explore ourself is through our emotions.

In my belief, emotions are how the soul sends us messages, making them important for us to tune into. Because emotions can be big and scary, and many of us were not modeled properly how to regulate or cope with our emotions, learning how to do this is important as a first step. Many of us can see the clear connections and create logical reasons for why we are the way we are. However, many of us are not taught how to process and heal the emotions that come up from these past events. This is why we still get triggered, although fully aware, and the emotion takes over our nervous system, leaving us feeling powerless. The triggers will still always be there, its learning how to manage the emotion that allows us to take back our power.

When you feel an unpleasant emotion, first ALLOW it to be there without judgement. Allow it to pass through your body.

Then IDENTIFY it. (i.e anger, disappointment, sadness, guilt, fear, shame). Try to observe it objectively, without judgement

. Example “I am angry.”

Last, BREATH through it. It will eventually pass!

Remember, it takes practice! In the beginning stages of trying to regulate our nervous system or learning how to be with our emotions, it is best to try these practices when not in an emotionally heightened state. Baby steps are key. For example, if someone cuts you off in traffic or you’re in a long line with little time to spare. These are smaller, insignificant moments we can take the opportunity to practice with.
